Most Common Causes of Death

The most common cause of death are cardiovascular diseases. Cancer is the second leading cause of death. It is estimated that a fifth of the total population of Romania suffers from a communicable or chronic disease.

There were 17,283 people with tuberculosis in 2008. The mortality rate is 31,8 people per 1000 infected citizens. At the moment, some statistics show that 30,000 people have been infected with the TB virus, making in the third largest country in North-Eastern Europe when it comes to infections with TB.

Approximately 3.7% of the total population of Romania is either a carrier or affected by hepatitis.

Less than 1% of the total population of Romania is a carrier or infected with HIV. The most common cause of getting HIV is sharing needles. Another cause was the HIV-infected blood in the 1980s, when blood donors were not being screened.

Famous quotes containing the words common and/or death:

What had really caused the women’s movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century women’s life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldn’t live all those years in terms of motherhood alone was “the problem that had no name.” Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.
    Betty Friedan (20th century)

And anyone is free to condemn me to death
If he leaves it to nature to carry out the sentence.
I shall will to the common stock of air my breath
And pay a death tax of fairly polite repentance.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
