Hazmat Suit - in Fiction

In Fiction

Hazmat suits have long been used as an important device found in fiction, especially science fiction, to dramatize the deadliness of lethal environments. Common dramatic situations usually involve a suit failure leading to rapid death in films such as The Andromeda Strain or Outbreak. Plot resolutions usually make the removal of a suit a pivotal moment, signifying the end of the threat.

The anonymity provided by hazmat suits has often been used to accentuate sinister motives, such as the scientists in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Hazmat suits have also been used as a comedic props in films such as Back to the Future wherein the protagonist is initially misidentified as an extraterrestrial after traveling to a time where the suit was an uncommon sight.

Hazmat suits are also commonly found in video games, used to navigate otherwise dangerous areas. Popular game series which feature hazmat-like suits include Maniac Mansion, Half-Life, Hitman: Contracts, Saints Row 2, The Conduit, Doom, Fallout 3, Deus Ex, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, its prequel S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and sequel S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Left 4 Dead 2. In the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Dead Money, the antagonists, called 'Ghost People', are humans trapped in their hazmat suits. Killzone 3 includes enemies called Hazmat Troopers.

Famous quotes containing the word fiction:

... all fiction may be autobiography, but all autobiography is of course fiction.
    Shirley Abbott (b. 1934)

A reader who quarrels with postulates, who dislikes Hamlet because he does not believe that there are ghosts or that people speak in pentameters, clearly has no business in literature. He cannot distinguish fiction from fact, and belongs in the same category as the people who send cheques to radio stations for the relief of suffering heroines in soap operas.
    Northrop Frye (b. 1912)
