Tough Times: Recession of The Early 1990s

Hazelton Lanes began to experience difficult times in the early 1990s with the recession that gripped Toronto and much of Canada. Many of the upscale stores in Hazelton Lanes closed their doors, and some of them moved to Bloor Street. One theory behind the many upscale store closures in Hazelton Lanes was the awkward design of the shopping centre, low ceilings, and poor-quality materials used in the construction of the new section. Currently, brick-work on parts of the complex's exterior are in disrepair.

Famous quotes containing the words tough and/or early:

Young children scare easily—a tough tone, a sharp reprimand, an exasperated glance, a peeved scowl will do it. Little signs of rejection—you don’t have to hit young children to hurt them—cut very deeply.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)

In the early forties and fifties almost everybody “had about enough to live on,” and young ladies dressed well on a hundred dollars a year. The daughters of the richest man in Boston were dressed with scrupulous plainness, and the wife and mother owned one brocade, which did service for several years. Display was considered vulgar. Now, alas! only Queen Victoria dares to go shabby.
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)
