Hazel Carter

During World War I, Hazel Carter of Douglas, Arizona stowed away on a ship to France to stay with her soldier husband, Corporal John Carter.

When her husband was to be sent overseas, she tried to join the Red Cross so she could be near him, but was not accepted. She wore an Army uniform to conceal her identity. She was discovered and sent home. She died while her husband, John, was still overseas.

Famous quotes containing the words hazel and/or carter:

For spring had entered the capital
    Walking on gigantic feet.
The smell of witch hazel indoors
Changed to narcissus in the street.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

It may be the first in what I trust will be a rapidly growing and influential genre—the novel designed on purpose to be excluded from the Booker short-list.
