Reduplication

Reduplication can emphasize or otherwise alter the meaning of a word. Examples are:

  • 'au "to swim"; 'au'au "to bathe"
  • ha'i "to say"; ha'iha'i "to speak back and forth"
  • ma'i "sick"; ma'ima'i "chronically sick"
