Haruhi is considered to have "tsundere" (literally meaning "hot and cold", alternating between harsh and caring) character traits, but is considered possibly "too energetic" to be a true tsundere. Her outlook has been compared to Fox Mulder's from the X-Files, as both characters "want to believe". One of the anonymous Tiger Mask donations was signed 'Haruhi Suzumiya'.
IGN ranked her as #19 on their list of top 25 anime characters.
