Harry Hopman - Personal Life

Personal Life

Hopman was first married to Nell Hall, with whom he won four mixed doubles finals. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1969 and became a highly successful professional coach at Port Washington Tennis Academy, for future champions such as Vitas Gerulaitis and later John McEnroe. Hopman later opened the Hopman Tennis Academy, at Largo, Florida, with his second wife, Lucy.

According to at least one tennis historian, Hopman was a heavy gambler who "once had to sell the land he had purchased for his dream home."

He died of a heart attack.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

What had really caused the women’s movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century women’s life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldn’t live all those years in terms of motherhood alone was “the problem that had no name.” Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.
    Betty Friedan (20th century)

The melancholy of having to count souls
Where they grow fewer and fewer every year
Is extreme where they shrink to none at all.
It must be I want life to go on living.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
