Hard Disk Drive Platter

A hard disk drive platter (or disk) is the circular disk on which magnetic data is stored in a hard disk drive. The rigid nature of the platters in a hard drive is what gives them their name (as opposed to the flexible materials which are used to make floppy disk). Hard drives typically have several platters which are mounted on the same spindle. A platter can store information on both sides, requiring two heads per platter.

Famous quotes containing the words hard, disk, drive and/or platter:

    It was a comfort in those succeeding days to sit up and contemplate the majestic panorama of mountains and valleys spread out below us and eat ham and hard boiled eggs while our spiritual natures reveled alternately in rainbows, thunderstorms, and peerless sunsets. Nothing helps scenery like ham and eggs.
    Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

    Unloved, that beech will gather brown,
    This maple burn itself away;

    Unloved, the sun-flower, shining fair,
    Ray round with flames her disk of seed,
    And many a rose-carnation feed
    With summer spice the humming air;
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)

    To drive men from independence to live on alms, is itself great cruelty.
    Edmund Burke (1729–1797)

    I remember the stink of the liverwurst.
    How I was put on a platter and laid
    between the mayonnaise and the bacon.
    The rhythm of the refrigerator
    had been disturbed.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
