As per provisional data of 2011 census, Hapur had a population of 262,801, out of which males were 139,694 and females were 123,107. The literacy rate was 75.34 per cent.

As of 2001 India census, Hapur had a population of 211,987. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Hapur has an average literacy rate of 58%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy rate is 65% and female literacy rate is 50%. In Hapur, 27% of people are Muslims & 70% are Hindus. The main religion practised by the people of Hapur is Hinduism, but Muslims are also present in huge number, other religions practised are Sikhism and Christianity. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age. The major languages spoken by the people of Hapur are Hindi and Punjabi.
