Then a 46-year-old spinster, she toiled alone in her family home, Low Birk Hatt Farm, (54°33′40″N 2°06′00″W / 54.561°N 2.1°W / 54.561; -2.1) a dilapidated 80-acre (320,000 m2) farm that she had run by herself since the age of 35 following the deaths of her parents and uncle.
