Hangzhou Metro - History

History

The planning for a metro system in the city started in the 1990s and was about to start construction works in September 2003, but the State Council suspended construction works due to increasing costs. The state council approved the planning of a rapid transit system on June 6, 2005. Hangzhou Subway Group Co. Ltd will build and operate the metro system in the eastern Chinese city. The preliminary design for Line 1 was approved on January 11, 2007 by the Development and Reform Commission after four days of work by the experts. The 47.97 km line will have 41.36 km of underground lines, 6.14 km elevated, and 0.47 km at ground level.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.
    Henry James (1843–1916)

Culture, the acquainting ourselves with the best that has been known and said in the world, and thus with the history of the human spirit.
    Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)

Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernism’s high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)
