Haimavati - Attainment of The Name Durga

Attainment of The Name Durga

The story of how Parvati got the name Durga is one of the most important events in the Devi Bhagavati Purana. Once a demon named Durgasur had peformed deep penance which pleased Brahma who inturn presented him with the unprecedented Vedas making him unconquerable because Vedas were the sources of power to the demigods.' All the demigods became worried and prayed to Shiva for help. Shiva said that only Parvati - the complete incarnation of Adi Shakti who is beyond the reach of Vedas could destroy Durgasur. Parvati accepted the task and sent Goddess Kalratri as a damsel messenger first. When talks failed, she went out to wage a battle and finally destroyed Durgasur and thus got the name Durga.

Famous quotes containing the words attainment of and/or attainment:

I do not pretend that language is science. It is ... an instrument for the attainment of science.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

Magic is akin to science in that it always has a definite aim intimately associated with human instincts, needs, and pursuits. The magic art is directed towards the attainment of practical aims. Like other arts and crafts, it is also governed by a theory, by a system of principles which dictate the manner in which the act has to be performed in order to be effective.
    Bronislaw Malinowski (1984–1942)
