Gumball 3000 - History

History

Often compared to the 1980s Cannonball Run films starring Burt Reynolds, the Gumball 3000 is actually not influenced by these or the stories that gave rise to those movies, but instead draws inspiration from movies such as Two-Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point, Bullitt and Le Mans. However, there was a 1976 movie called The Gumball Rally featuring a 3000-mile race across America with exotic cars and international drivers on public roads that may be the source of the name of the race.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

    A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
    Of timeless moments.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
