Production and Trade
The guar bean is principally grown in India and Pakistan, with smaller crops in the US, Australia, China, and Africa. In India, Rajasthan and Haryana are the main producing regions, and Jodhpur in Rajasthan is a major Guar trading market.
India produces about 600,000 tons of guar annually, making it the largest producer with about 80% of world production. In Pakistan, Punjab is the main production area for guar beans.
The world market for guar gum and its derivatives is about 150,000 tons annually and India accounts for about 80% of the global trade in guar products generating exports of guar products worth about 11 billion rupees. Industrial guar gum accounts for about 45% of the total demand. It is used as a controlling agent in oil wells to facilitate easy drilling and prevent fluid loss.
