  • Grosse Pointe was where John Hughes spent the first twelve years of his life. It is also where the film Grosse Pointe Blank takes place, which stars John Cusack as a hitman who attends his ten year high school reunion; this is perhaps intended as a morbid parody of the John Hughes high school films that Cusack starred in.
  • Jeffrey Eugenides' 1993 novel, The Virgin Suicides, and its subsequent 1999 film adaptation are set in Grosse Pointe.
  • Maggie O'Connell, a character in the 1990's television series Northern Exposure was born and raised in Grosse Pointe. One episode entitled "Grosse Pointe, 48230" involved her visit home for a family reunion to commemorate her grandmother's birthday.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

The lowest form of popular culture—lack of information, misinformation, disinformation, and a contempt for the truth or the reality of most people’s lives—has overrun real journalism. Today, ordinary Americans are being stuffed with garbage.
    Carl Bernstein (b. 1944)

Lawyers are necessary in a community. Some of you ... take a different view; but as I am a member of that legal profession, or was at one time, and have only lost standing in it to become a politician, I still retain the pride of the profession. And I still insist that it is the law and the lawyer that make popular government under a written constitution and written statutes possible.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

The problem of culture is seldom grasped correctly. The goal of a culture is not the greatest possible happiness of a people, nor is it the unhindered development of all their talents; instead, culture shows itself in the correct proportion of these developments. Its aim points beyond earthly happiness: the production of great works is the aim of culture.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
