Great Lakes Airlines was an airline in Canada. It was formed in 1958 in Sarnia, Ontario by Mr. John Blunt and by 1983 became Air Ontario Ltd. In June 1987 Air Ontario Ltd merged with Austin Airways to form Air Ontario Inc.
Aircraft in service with the company in the 1970s, Convairs, were older, and were subject to vibrations during take-off, resulting in passengers nicknaming the company "Great Shakes"; the name Air Ontario prompted "Scare Ontario".

Famous quotes containing the word lakes:
“While the very inhabitants of New England were thus fabling about the country a hundred miles inland, which was a terra incognita to them,... Champlain, the first Governor of Canada,... had already gone to war against the Iroquois in their forest forts, and penetrated to the Great Lakes and wintered there, before a Pilgrim had heard of New England.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
