Great Britain At The 1980 Summer Olympics
The United Kingdom competed as Great Britain at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR. British athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. 219 competitors, 149 men and 70 women, took part in 145 events in 14 sports.
The UK government allowed its athletes to choose whether to compete, and only a few athletes chose to stay away. There was a token boycott of the opening ceremony, the Olympic flag was raised for UK medal winners and the Olympic anthem played for the five gold medalists.

Famous quotes containing the words britain and/or summer:
“The proposition that Muslims are welcome in Britain if, and only if, they stop behaving like Muslims is a doctrine which is incompatible with the principles that guide a free society.”
—Roy Hattersley (b. 1932)
“The Roman rule was, to teach a boy nothing that he could not learn standing. The old English rule was, All summer in the field, and all winter in the study. And it seems as if a man should learn to plant, or to fish, or to hunt, that he might secure his subsistence at all events, and not be painful to his friends and fellow men.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
