Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory - Objectives

Objectives

  • Map the structure of the lunar crust and lithosphere
  • Understand the asymmetric thermal evolution of the Moon
  • Determine the subsurface structure of impact basins and the origin of lunar mascons
  • Ascertain the temporal evolution of crustal brecciation and magmatism
  • Constrain the deep interior structure of the Moon
  • Place limits on the size of the Moon's inner core

The data collection phase of the mission will last 90 days, and will be followed by 12 months of data analysis. Results will begin to become available about 30 days after the collection begins. The knowledge acquired will aid understanding of the evolutionary history of the terrestrial planets and computations of lunar orbits.

Famous quotes containing the word objectives:

Along the journey we commonly forget its goal. Almost every vocation is chosen and entered upon as a means to a purpose but is ultimately continued as a final purpose in itself. Forgetting our objectives is the most frequent stupidity in which we indulge ourselves.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
