Gran Plot - Titrating Strong Base With Strong Acid

Titrating Strong Base With Strong Acid

Mirror-image plots are obtained if titrating the base with the acid, and the signs of the slopes are reversed.

\frac{v_0 _0-v_i_0}{v_0+v_i} \begin{cases}
\approx _i \text{ or } K_w 10^{pH_i} & \text{ when } v_{0^{ }} _0 > v_i_0 \text{ (alkaline region)} \\
= 0 & \text{ when } v_{0^{ }} _0 = v_i_0 \text{ (equivalence point)} \\
\approx -_i \text{ or } -10^{-pH_i} & \text{ when } v_{0^{ }} _0 < v_i_0 \text{ (acidic region)}
\end{cases}

Hence,

  • a plot of will have a linear region before equivalence with slope
  • and a plot of will have a linear region after equivalence with slope
  • both plots will have as x-intercept

Figure 1 gives sample Gran plots of a strong base-strong acid titration.

Famous quotes containing the words strong and/or base:

    “The unities, sir,’ he said, “are a completeness—a kind of universal dovetailedness with regard to place and time—a sort of general oneness, if I may be allowed to use so strong an expression. I take those to be the dramatic unities, so far as I have been enabled to bestow attention upon them, and I have read much upon the subject, and thought much.”
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

    Who is here so base that would be a bondman? If any, speak, for him have I offended. Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman? If any, speak, for him have I offended. Who is here so vile that will not love his country? If any, speak, for him have I offended.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
