Government House (Ontario) - First Government Houses

First Government Houses

The first vice-regal residences of Upper Canada were Navy Hall in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Castle Frank from 1795-1796 (deserted and burned down in 1829) and Russell Abbey from 1796-1799 when the capital moved to York.

The first official residence was a one-storey frame house built at Fort York at the turn of the 19th century, first occupied by the colony's second Lieutenant Governor, Peter Hunter. The structure was destroyed when a nearby powder magazine exploded in 1813 during the War of 1812.

Famous quotes containing the words government and/or houses:

Money is power, and in that government which pays all the public officers of the states will all political power be substantially concentrated.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

The name of the town isn’t important. It’s the one that’s just twenty-eight minutes from the big city. Twenty-three if you catch the morning express. It’s on a river and it’s got houses and stores and churches. And a main street. Nothing fancy like Broadway or Market, just plain Broadway. Drug, dry good, shoes. Those horrible little chain stores that breed like rabbits.
    Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1909–1993)
