There are five recognized classes of gold plating chemistry:
- Alkaline gold cyanide, for gold and gold alloy plating
- Neutral gold cyanide, for high-purity plating
- Acid gold plating for bright hard gold and gold alloy plating
- Non-cyanide, generally sulfite or chloride-based for gold and gold alloy plating

Famous quotes containing the words gold and/or chemistry:
“We are educated in the grossest ignorance, and no art omitted to stifle our natural reason; if some few get above their nurses instructions, our knowledge must rest concealed and be as useless to the world as gold in the mine.”
—Mary Wortley, Lady Montagu (16891762)
“For me chemistry represented an indefinite cloud of future potentialities which enveloped my life to come in black volutes torn by fiery flashes, like those which had hidden Mount Sinai. Like Moses, from that cloud I expected my law, the principle of order in me, around me, and in the world.... I would watch the buds swell in spring, the mica glint in the granite, my own hands, and I would say to myself: I will understand this, too, I will understand everything.”
—Primo Levi (19191987)
