Since 2008, Greenwald has been placed on many lists of the top 50 or top 25 online columnists in the United States. In June, 2012, Newsweek magazine named Greenwald one of America's Top 10 Opinionists, saying that "a righteous, controlled, and razor-sharp fury runs through a great deal" of his writing, and: "His independent persuasion can make him a danger or an asset to both sides of the aisle."
Greenwald, who is Jewish, has also been criticized for his attacks on Israel's foreign policy and his complaints about that nation's influence on American politics.
