Georgia Gwinnett College - Athletics

Athletics

Georgia Gwinnett teams, nicknamed athletically as the Grizzlies, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing as an Independent of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII). Men's sports include baseball, basketball (2013-14), soccer and tennis; while women's sports include basketball (2013-14), soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball (2013-14).

In 2008, GGC students selected the grizzly bear as the college's official mascot; the mascot's name is General Grizzly. In May 2011, the college announced plans to construct a $12 million athletic complex that includes a soccer field circled by a track, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a practice field and an athletics building for lockers, coaches and athletic staff offices. In August 2011, Dr. Darin Wilson was hired as the first director of athletics for Georgia Gwinnett College. The college completed intramural fields for the 2011-12 academic year and began various sports competing as club teams. The college applied for membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and became one of four new members in the NAIA in April 2012. The college will become a full member of the NAIA beginning August 1, 2012. The new GGC intercollegiate athletic teams will compete in the NAIA but will not be eligible to compete for NAIA championships until the 2013-14 academic year.

Their first collegiate event will be held on August 25, 2012 when the men's soccer and women's soccer teams compete against Tennessee Temple University in a double-header.
