The George Tavern is a Grade II listed public house and music venue located at 373 Commercial Rd, London E1, owned and run by artist Pauline Forster.
It was formerly known as the Halfway House, and contains original brickwork from the Halfway House, a tavern some 700 years old, mentioned by Chaucer, Pepys and Dickens.
Now a music, performance and arts venue, known for photoshoots and filming. Kate Moss, Amy Winehouse and Sir Ian McKellen helped campaign to stop development on part of the site – the infamous Stepney’s Club with light up dance floor.
In October 2008, The George Tavern was runner-up in Stella's "Love Your Local Campaign", a competition to find London's best loved pubs and highlight the struggling pub industry.
Famous quotes containing the words george and/or tavern:
“She loved Cecil; George made her nervous; will the reader explain to her that the phrases should have been reversed?”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
“Because it is in the nature of things that they become extreme, we have passed down from manliness to cruelty. If I had been told when I was 20 that there was a tavern in the town where the brave and the cruel were gathered together, I would have run all the way and I would have gone up to the largest and leatheriest of the denizens and said: If you truly love me, kill the bartender.”
—Quentin Crisp (b. 1908)
