Alex Harkinson was the estranged son of Derek Harkinson. He had not seen his father since he walked out on his mother, Cynthia, to live with another man, Robert, when Alex was eight years old. When Derek's friend Pauline Fowler found out that Derek had children, she contacted Mary without telling Derek. Mary initially agreed to meet with Derek, but shut the door in his face when he arrived at her house, so Pauline went to Alex's house to speak to him. Alex, not knowing that his father was gay, assumed that Pauline was the woman Derek had left Cynthia for, and told her to leave. Mary later visited Derek on Boxing Day 2003, and was followed by Alex, who berated her and argued with Derek, but later relented and introduced him to his son, Danny.
