George Hamilton (commentator) - Broadcasting Career

Broadcasting Career

Hamilton began his commentary career with BBC Sport, before joining RTÉ. Since 2003, Hamilton has worked for RTÉ lyric fm (Ireland's classical radio station) on Saturday mornings. For many years he also fronted a popular weekly quiz show on RTÉ, Know Your Sport, alongside fellow commentator Jimmy Magee. Hamilton's cultured approach to sports commentary has won him admirers, and, although his remarks are sometimes scoffed at, he has been a leading voice in Irish sport.

In 2010, Hamilton was chief commentator for RTÉ Sport's coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This was his ninth World Cup. Hamilton was also RTE's chief commentator at Euro 2012 and covered all of Ireland's matches in the competition.

He also presents a show on RTÉ lyric fm each Saturday morning and writes a classical music column for the Irish Independent.

Famous quotes containing the words broadcasting and/or career:

We spend all day broadcasting on the radio and TV telling people back home what’s happening here. And we learn what’s happening here by spending all day monitoring the radio and TV broadcasts from back home.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

“Never hug and kiss your children! Mother love may make your children’s infancy unhappy and prevent them from pursuing a career or getting married!” That’s total hogwash, of course. But it shows on extreme example of what state-of-the-art “scientific” parenting was supposed to be in early twentieth-century America. After all, that was the heyday of efficiency experts, time-and-motion studies, and the like.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
