As Acting Viceroy of India

Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India, left for London on leave from July 1929. He appointed Goschen to act as the Viceroy during his absence. George Goschen's father, the 1st Viscount, had been offered the Viceroyalty of India by British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone in 1880 but had declined the offer.

Goschen acted as the Viceroy of India from 29 June 1929 to 18 April 1931. He was succeeded by the Earl of Willingdon on 18 April 1931.
