George Best Belfast City Airport - Renaming in Memory of George Best

Renaming in Memory of George Best

In March 2006, it was announced that the airport would be renamed in memory of the late Northern Irish footballer George Best. The new name, George Best Belfast City Airport, and signage were revealed at the renaming ceremony attended by Best's family and friends on 22 May 2006, which would have been Best's 60th birthday.

The renaming of the airport caused controversy, with many articles in local and national print media highlighting the mixed feelings of Belfast residents.

In March 2006 Flybe announced that it would be naming its Belfast City – Manchester service after the late footballer, dedicating a plane to him.

Famous quotes containing the words renaming and/or memory:

I keep renaming my motives, but continue doing the same things.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

We find that even the parents who justify spanking to themselves are defensive and embarrassed about it....I suspect that deep in the memory of every parent are the feelings that had attended his own childhood spankings, the feelings of humiliation, of helplessness, of submission through fear. The parent who finds himself spanking his own child cannot dispel the ghosts of his own childhood.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
