Genesis 1:1 is the first Bible verse of the first chapter in the Book of Genesis of the Hebrew Bible. The verse opens the Genesis creation narrative in Hebrew with: Translated into English it reads: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1). The verse's translation and interpretation are of major theological significance in developing the concept that God created the universe out of nothing (creation ex nihilo).
