Trends in Generic Brands

They are generally more popular in recessionary times, when the purchasing power of people is low and they are on the lookout for value for money products. Generic brands are more readily available for goods such as aluminium foil, CD/DVD, hand tools, paper products and small appliances.

Due to the lack of promotional effort, generic brands are priced lower than branded products. In this sense, they function as substitutes for the brand-name products and compete on the price quotient. The cost conscious customer may tend to pick the cheaper substitute when placed in the vicinity.

Generic brands are low on Brand Tax. They are preferred by customers for whom price is the priority. This group of people doesn't believe that the tax to be paid for the image or the promise of slight variation in quality is justified. The same set of people, however, may be willing to pay brand tax for a distinct category of products about which they are particular. In this case, they won't pick a generic brand.

Famous quotes containing the words trends in, trends, generic and/or brands:

Thanks to recent trends in the theory of knowledge, history is now better aware of its own worth and unassailability than it formerly was. It is precisely in its inexact character, in the fact that it can never be normative and does not have to be, that its security lies.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

A point has been reached where the peoples of the Americas must take cognizance of growing ill-will, of marked trends toward aggression, of increasing armaments, of shortening tempers—a situation which has in it many of the elements that lead to the tragedy of general war.... Peace is threatened by those who seek selfish power.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

“Mother” has always been a generic term synonymous with love, devotion, and sacrifice. There’s always been something mystical and reverent about them. They’re the Walter Cronkites of the human race . . . infallible, virtuous, without flaws and conceived without original sin, with no room for ambivalence.
    Erma Bombeck (20th century)

    Helios makes all things right:
    night brands and chokes
    as if destruction broke
over furze and stone and crop.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)
