Geelong Transit System - History

History

Although trials of a time-based ticketing system commenced in Geelong in the early 1980s as part of a reform of transport ticketing in Victoria, it was not until 1983 that the Geelong Transit System was inaugurated. Over time, buses delivering route services in Geelong were painted in the Geelong Transit System livery of white body and blue stripes. However, after Kefford Corporation purchased Benders in 2000 its buses have progressively been repainted into their own green livery. It seems clear that the contracts governing the two operators of GTS buses ceased to enforce the requirement for a common livery after 2000.

Since April 2006 V/Line railway tickets sold to Geelong, South Geelong, and Marshall railway stations have included GTS travel, as part of the integration of the Victorian public transport fare systems before the introduction of myki. In 2008 the coming availability of daily and weekly tickets was announced.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

The only thing worse than a liar is a liar that’s also a hypocrite!
There are only two great currents in the history of mankind: the baseness which makes conservatives and the envy which makes revolutionaries.
    Edmond De Goncourt (1822–1896)

History is the present. That’s why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth.
    —E.L. (Edgar Lawrence)
