Gator Football Ring of Honor

The Gator Football Ring of Honor is the University of Florida's alternative to retiring a player's number and pays homage to the greatest former players and coaches. Physically, it is a ring displayed on the North Endzone façade of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, displaying the names of the players and coaches who have contributed greatly to the Florida Gators football team. It was created in 2006 in commemoration of 100 years of Florida Football and was unveiled before the kickoff of the Alabama game that season. The four initial inductees to the Ring of Honor were Emmitt Smith, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel, and Jack Youngblood.

For 2007, the University of Florida Athletic Association announced that former Gator and NFL Pro Bowl linebacker, Wilber Marshall would be the next inductee. The ceremony for that induction took place before the September 29, 2007 Florida-Auburn football game.

Famous quotes containing the words football, ring and/or honor:

In football they measure forty-yard sprints. Nobody runs forty yards in basketball. Maybe you run the ninety-four feet of the court; then you stop, not on a dime, but on Miss Liberty’s torch. In football you run over somebody’s face.
    Donald Hall (b. 1928)

Interpreting the dance: young women in white dancing in a ring can only be virgins; old women in black dancing in a ring can only be witches; but middle-aged women in colors, square dancing...?
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honor him; but as he was ambitious, I slew him. There is tears for his love; joy for his fortune; honor for his valor; and death for his ambition.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
