Gary Ruley and Mule Train - Musical Style

Musical Style

Known as one of the finest acoustic flat pickers, Gary Ruley plays mostly vintage Martin guitars. He was born in western Virginia and raised on bluegrass and old-time mountain music. Influences include Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Don Reno and Red Smiley, as well as the Beatles.

". . even if the programs from these two volumes of live recordings mix bluegrass standards with the likes of Ellington, Grisman, and the Beatles, they are all delivered with drive and precision, while the vocals project an informal geniality." —review of Live at the Troubadour, Volumes One & Two, Bluegrass Unlimited

Famous quotes containing the words musical and/or style:

There was something refreshingly and wildly musical to my ears in the very name of the white man’s canoe, reminding me of Charlevoix and Canadian Voyageurs. The batteau is a sort of mongrel between the canoe and the boat, a fur-trader’s boat.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

All my stories are webs of style and none seems at first blush to contain much kinetic matter.... For me “style” is matter.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
