Nations Cup

In 2002 Holden Motorsport was looking at running a Holden Monaro in the Bathurst 24 Hour endurance sports car race against the likes of the Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari F360, Chrysler Viper and Porsche 911. Garry Rogers Motorsport was given the job of building the car as well as running it. The car ran a GRM version of the Corvette C5-R 427cui motor. In its race debut, the 2002 Bathurst 24 it overcame fuel cell problems to win the race by 24 laps driven by Garth Tander, Steven Richards, Cameron McConville and Nathan Pretty. Pretty then drove the car in the 2003 Australian Nations Cup Championship scoring numerous race wins but not the title. In 2003 GRM built a second car for the legendary Peter Brock. It was this second car which won the second Bathurst 24hr race with Jason Bright, Todd Kelly and Greg Murphy sharing the driving with Brock. The winning car from 2002, driven by the same four drivers as the previous year finished second less than one second behind after 24 hours of racing.

One more Monaro was built in late 2003 for Team Brock and drivers Peter and James Brock to run in the 2004 Australian Nations Cup Championship. Peter Brock drove his Bathurst winning car alongside James in the new car with GRM running the oldest car for Nathan Pretty.

Famous quotes containing the words nations and/or cup:

    For nations vague as weed,
    For nomads among stones,
    Small-statured cross-faced tribes
    And cobble-close families
    In mill-towns on dark mornings
    Life is slow dying.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

I worked as a waitress till I was fired because I dumped a cup of hot coffee in the lap of a half-drunk guy who was pinching my butt.
    Juli Loesch (b. c. 1953)
