Galway United F.C.

Galway United F.C. (Irish: Cumann Peile Ghaillimh Aontaithe) was founded as Galway Rovers in 1937. They are a football club, who last played in the League of Ireland Premier Division, the top tier of the Irish football in 2011. The club currently have a team in League of Ireland U19 League.

Galway first joined the League of Ireland in 1977, having been invited to participate in the League Cup in the previous year.

Galway Rovers made its League of Ireland debut in Terryland Park, Galway, against St Patrick's Athletic on the August 28 of that year.

Until February 2011, the club's chief executive was ex-derivatives trader Nick Leeson, whose unsupervised speculative trading caused the collapse of Barings Bank, the UK's oldest investment bank.

The club, having been operated on a day-to-day basis by the supporters' group, the Galway United Supporters Trust (GUST) for the 2011 season, withdrew their application for a 2012 licence. GUST applied for a licence to play in the 2012 League of Ireland, but were refused the opportunity to submit their application.

Famous quotes containing the words galway and/or united:

We dreamed that a great painter had been born
To cold Clare rock and Galway rock and thorn,
To that stern colour and that delicate line
    That are our secret discipline
Wherein the gazing heart doubles her might....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

... the yearly expenses of the existing religious system ... exceed in these United States twenty millions of dollars. Twenty millions! For teaching what? Things unseen and causes unknown!... Twenty millions would more than suffice to make us wise; and alas! do they not more than suffice to make us foolish?
    Frances Wright (1795–1852)
