Gail Vaz-Oxlade - Personal Life

Personal Life

Born to a wealthy family in Jamaica, Vaz-Oxlade immigrated to Canada with her family in 1977. Her family includes Douglas Vaz a former president of the Jamaica Manufacturers Association and former Minister of Industry and Commerce. Her surname is the result of hyphenating her maiden name and her first husband's surname. She has been married three times: the first marriage lasted one year; the second lasted nine years; and the third lasted eighteen years. However, Vaz-Oxlade, in a money-saving endeavour, has not divorced her last husband. Rather, they are legally separated. Vaz-Oxlade has two children.

Famous quotes containing the words personal life, personal and/or life:

    The dialectic between change and continuity is a painful but deeply instructive one, in personal life as in the life of a people. To “see the light” too often has meant rejecting the treasures found in darkness.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

    What had really caused the women’s movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century women’s life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldn’t live all those years in terms of motherhood alone was “the problem that had no name.” Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.
    Betty Friedan (20th century)

    A native health and innocence
    Within my bones did grow,
    And while my God did all his glories show,
    I felt a vigour in my sense
    That was all spirit: I within did flow
    With seas of life like wine;
    I nothing in the world did know
    But ‘twas divine.
    Thomas Traherne (1636–1674)
