Gaelic Games in Western Canada

The Irish have a long and rich history in Canada dating back centuries. The first recorded Irish presence in the area of present day Canada dates from 1536, when Irish fishermen from Cork travelled to Newfoundland.

Hurling has been played in North America ever since Irish immigrants began landing on North American shores. Many argue, with some conviction & no small amount of fact to support their case, that Canada's current favorite sport, ice hockey, has its origins in Hurling. The word puck may be derived from the Irish word 'poc' which is the action of striking the ball with a hurley.

Famous quotes containing the words games, western and/or canada:

Criticism occupies the lowest place in the literary hierarchy: as regards form, almost always; and as regards moral value, incontestably. It comes after rhyming games and acrostics, which at least require a certain inventiveness.
    Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880)

When Western people train the mind, the focus is generally on the left hemisphere of the cortex, which is the portion of the brain that is concerned with words and numbers. We enhance the logical, bounded, linear functions of the mind. In the East, exercises of this sort are for the purpose of getting in tune with the unconscious—to get rid of boundaries, not to create them.
    Edward T. Hall (b. 1914)

I see Canada as a country torn between a very northern, rather extraordinary, mystical spirit which it fears and its desire to present itself to the world as a Scotch banker.
    Robertson Davies (b. 1913)
