French Lick Resort Casino - West Baden Springs Hotel

West Baden Springs Hotel

The historic 243-room luxury West Baden Springs Hotel in the adjacent town a mile away is also part of the Casino Resort complex. The hotel was built in 1902 and held the title of the largest free-spanning dome in the world. It remained the largest dome in the United States until the completerion of the Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1955. The hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, became a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and is an Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. In 2008 the West Baden Springs Hotel was cited by Condé Nast Traveler readers as one of the best mainland U.S. resorts.

Famous quotes containing the words west, springs and/or hotel:

It’s a fine land, the west land, for hearts as tired as mine,
Apple orchards blossom there, and the air’s like wine.
    John Masefield (1878–1967)

In short, as a snow-drift is formed where there is a lull in the wind, so, one would say, where there is a lull of truth, an institution springs up. But the truth blows right on over it, nevertheless, and at length blows it down.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

...what a thing it is to lie there all day in the fine breeze, with the pine needles dropping on one, only to return to the hotel at night so hungry that the dinner, however homely, is a fete, and the menu finer reading than the best poetry in the world! Yet we are to leave all this for the glare and blaze of Nice and Monte Carlo; which is proof enough that one cannot become really acclimated to happiness.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)
