Early Years
After attending R. L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas, Ryan went to Rice University, but was unable to establish himself during the course of his collegiate career, splitting time behind center with King Hill, who was receiving most of the snaps.
Given his desire to continue toward a Ph.D., Ryan originally decided not to play professional football after the Rams chose him in the fifth round of the 1958 NFL Draft. However, he changed his mind after he was able to enroll at both UCLA and University of California, Berkeley in pursuit of the advanced degree.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:
“Although good early childhood programs can benefit all children, they are not a quick fix for all of societys illsfrom crime in the streets to adolescent pregnancy, from school failure to unemployment. We must emphasize that good quality early childhood programs can help change the social and educational outcomes for many children, but they are not a panacea; they cannot ameliorate the effects of all harmful social and psychological environments.”
—Barbara Bowman (20th century)
“All through the years of our youth
Neither could have known
Their own thought from the others,
We were so much at one.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
