Foxton Branch - The Branch Today

The Branch Today

The line ran for much of its length right beside State Highways 1 and 56, but road re-alignment and flood control earthworks have destroyed much of the formation. Near Longburn, SH 56 utilises the formation. Rubble from both the railway and old road bridges across the Oroua River can still be seen from the new road bridge. The station site and formation northwards remain visible in Foxton.

Cycling enthusiasts have advocated for the construction of a rail trail roughly following the route of the Foxton Branch as part of a strategy to encourage more people to take up cycling and attract more visitors to the region.

Famous quotes containing the words branch and/or today:

    That man’s the true Conservative
Who lops the mouldered branch away.
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)

Everything here below beneath the sun is subject to continual change; and perhaps there is nothing which can be called more inconstant than opinion, which turns round in an everlasting circle like the wheel of fortune. He who reaps praise today is overwhelmed with biting censure tomorrow; today we trample under foot the man who tomorrow will be raised far above us.
    —E.T.A.W. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Wilhelm)
