Fort Pitt Grammar School - History

History

Fort Pitt School is built upon the site of the old fort, sharing the campus with the University College for the Creative Arts (formerly KIAD). The school was Medway Girls Technical School until its abolishment (the tripartite system was replace by just secondary modern and grammar schools) in the 1970s, when it was converted to a grammar school for girls aged 11 to 18. The site has also previously been the location for the hospital Florence Nightingale worked at during the Crimean War. Some of the ward numbers can still be seen on the walls of the "West Wing" of the school, which is now a listed building. Also artefacts that have been found on the school site are displayed in the West Wing corridor for visitors and students to see.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

We know only a single science, the science of history. One can look at history from two sides and divide it into the history of nature and the history of men. However, the two sides are not to be divided off; as long as men exist the history of nature and the history of men are mutually conditioned.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

We said that the history of mankind depicts man; in the same way one can maintain that the history of science is science itself.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of God’s property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
