Famous quotes containing the words fort, davis, high and/or school:

    Look, it’s moving. It’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive. It’s moving. It’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive!
    —Garrett Fort (1900–1945)

The weak are the most treacherous of us all. They come to the strong and drain them. They are bottomless. They are insatiable. They are always parched and always bitter. They are everyone’s concern and like vampires they suck our life’s blood.
    —Bette Davis (1908–1989)

All women, from the countess to the cook-maid, are put into high good humor with themselves when a man is taken with them at first sight. And be they ever so plain, they will find twenty good reasons to defend the judgment of such a man.
    Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)

I’m not making light of prayers here, but of so-called school prayer, which bears as much resemblance to real spiritual experience as that freeze-dried astronaut food bears to a nice standing rib roast. From what I remember of praying in school, it was almost an insult to God, a rote exercise in moving your mouth while daydreaming or checking out the cutest boy in the seventh grade that was a far, far cry from soul-searching.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
