Foreign Relations of The Republic of Ireland - United Nations

United Nations

The United Nations was founded in 1945, but Ireland's membership was blocked by the Soviet Union until 1955. Since 25 July 2007, the Irish ambassador to the UN Office at Geneva has been Dáithí Ó Ceallaigh. Ireland has been elected to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member on three occasions — in 1962, in 1981–1982 and most recently in 2001–2002.

Ireland is a member state of the International Criminal Court, having signed the Rome Statute in 1998 and ratified it in 2002.
