Ford National Reliability Air Tour - 1926 National Air Tour

1926 National Air Tour

The 1926 Air tour started at Ford Field on August 7, 1926. The event featured the unvieling of the prototype Ford Flivver. There was a field of 25 contestants. A new scoring system for time to "stick" and "unstick" aircraft to the ground helped promote the use of brakes which were unpopular at the time.

The new Ford Trimotor had a prop failure that shook loose one landing gear and an engine on one side. The plane landed hard in a field at Nova, Ohio. Walter Beech won in a Travel Air aircraft.

  • A Pitcairn PA-2 Sesquiwing won in two of the classes.
  • Clarence E Clark placed seventh in a Travel Air 3000
  • Vance Breese placed eighth in a Ryan M-1.

Famous quotes containing the words national, air and/or tour:

    Just so before we’re international,
We’re national and act as nationals.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Oh none too soon through the air white and dry
    Will the clear announcer’s voice
Beat like a dove, and you and I

From the heart’s anarch and responsible town
Return by subway-mouth to life again,
    Bearing the morning papers,
    Richard Wilbur (b. 1921)

Left Washington, September 6, on a tour through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia.... Absent nineteen days. Received every where heartily. The country is again one and united! I am very happy to be able to feel that the course taken has turned out so well.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
