Terminology
Football can refer to several different variations of football as there are regional variations in the use of the word football and its derived colloquialism "footy" in Australia. For example, although "footy" primarily refers to Australian rules football in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, in New South Wales and Queensland, "footy" primarily refers to Rugby league.
There are four major football codes in Australia, these are Australian rules football, league, rugby and soccer, each with different levels of popularity based on different measures in different jurisdictions.
