Fluoxetine - Mechanism of Action

Mechanism of Action

Fluoxetine's mechanism of action is predominantly that of a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. However, it may also produce some of its effects via its potent 5-HT2C receptor antagonist effects. In addition, fluoxetine has been found to act as an agonist of the σ1-receptor, with a potency greater than that of citalopram but less than that of fluvoxamine, though the significance of this property is not fully clear either.

Famous quotes containing the words mechanism of, mechanism and/or action:

The two elements the traveler first captures in the big city are extrahuman architecture and furious rhythm. Geometry and anguish. At first glance, the rhythm may be confused with gaiety, but when you look more closely at the mechanism of social life and the painful slavery of both men and machines, you see that it is nothing but a kind of typical, empty anguish that makes even crime and gangs forgivable means of escape.
    Federico García Lorca (1898–1936)

When one of us dies of cancer, loses her mind, or commits suicide, we must not blame her for her inability to survive an ongoing political mechanism bent on the destruction of that human being. Sanity remains defined simply by the ability to cope with insane conditions.
    Ana Castillo (b. 1953)

The beginning, middle, and end of the birth, growth, and perfection of whatever we behold is from contraries, by contraries, and to contraries; and whatever contrarity is, there is action and reaction, there is motion, diversity, multitude, and order, there are degrees, succession and vicissitude.
    Giordano Bruno (1548–1600)
