Flower Mantis

Flower Mantis is a common name given to various species of praying mantis that mimic flowers. Their coloration is an example of aggressive mimicry, a form of camouflage in which the colours and patterns lure prey. Most species of flower mantis are in the family Hymenopodidae.

Famous quotes containing the words flower and/or mantis:

    So the soul, that drop, that ray
    Of the clear fountain of eternal day,
    Could it within the human flower be seen,
    Remembering still its former height,
    Shuns the sweet leaves and blossoms green;
    And, recollecting its own light,
    Does, in its pure and circling thoughts, express
    The greater heaven in an heaven less.
    Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)

    The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole lurking behind it.
    Chinese proverb.
