Higher Education
Francis Marion University, a public university of approximately 4,000 students founded in 1970, is located about seven miles (11 km) east of Florence.
Florence-Darlington Technical College was established in 1963 and presently serves nearly 6,000 curriculum students (as of the Fall 2011 Semester) and more than 25,000 regional residents through its continuing education division. The college operates satellite campuses in Hartsville, Lake City and Mullins. In addition, a site in Darlington County houses the cosmetology center and downtown Florence is home to the Health Sciences Campus. The Southeastern Institute for Manufacturing and Technology (SIMT) opened 2007 on a 146-acre (0.59 km2) tract behind FDTC's main campus.
Coker College in Hartsville and Coastal Carolina University in Conway are also not far away.

Famous quotes containing the words higher education, higher and/or education:
“I know that I will always be expected to have extra insight into black textsespecially texts by black women. A working-class Jewish woman from Brooklyn could become an expert on Shakespeare or Baudelaire, my students seemed to believe, if she mastered the language, the texts, and the critical literature. But they would not grant that a middle-class white man could ever be a trusted authority on Toni Morrison.”
—Claire Oberon Garcia, African American scholar and educator. Chronicle of Higher Education, p. B2 (July 27, 1994)
“We live between two worlds; we soar in the atmosphere; we creep upon the soil; we have the aspirations of creators and the propensities of quadrupeds. There can be but one explanation of this fact. We are passing from the animal into a higher form, and the drama of this planet is in its second act.”
—W. Winwood Reade (18381875)
“Columbus stood in his age as the pioneer of progress and enlightenment. The system of universal education is in our age the most prominent and salutary feature of the spirit of enlightenment, and it is peculiarly appropriate that the schools be made by the people the center of the days demonstration. Let the national flag float over every schoolhouse in the country and the exercises be such as shall impress upon our youth the patriotic duties of American citizenship.”
—Benjamin Harrison (18331901)
