Authorship

Balagtas wrote the epic (classified as such despite its main characters' not possessing any extraordinary powers) during his imprisonment. He dedicated to his sweetheart MarĂa Asuncion Rivera, whom he nicknamed "M. A. R." and is referenced to as "Selya" in the dedication "Kay Selya" ("For Celia"). Rivera was later married to Balagtas' rival, Mariano Capule, who later leveled false charges against him.

Famous quotes containing the word authorship:

The Bible is good enough for me, just the old book under which I was brought up. I do not want notes or criticisms, or explanations about authorship or origins, or even cross- references. I do not need, or understand them, and they confuse me.
    Grover Cleveland (1837–1908)
