Flemingsbergsskogen Nature Reserve - History

History

Several axes from the Stone Age found in the area indicates it was first populated about 7-8.000 years ago. Two Iron Age hill forts (500 BCE-1050 CE) within the reserve are believed to have served as retreats from robbers who frequently entered the Lake Mälaren region from the Baltic Sea to raid the area. The upland location of these forts must have made them beyond reach for enemies who would hardly drag their ships to a location 10-15 metres above sea level. The Stensättra Mansion located south-east of the fort, is believed to date back to the Viking Era, though the present building was created in the 1820s.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the Creation, because as a result of what happened in this week, the world is bigger, infinitely.
    Richard M. Nixon (1913–1995)
